Living Large in a Small Space

As much as this fact sucks, we all can’t have huge houses with endless room space. That’s just not the way of the world anymore - condos are popping up everywhere and having a large home isn’t always practical. So, let’s talk about some tips and tricks for you to make your space look bigger than it is (and, of course, be the coolest person around with your new and improved space).

Let’s starts with the flooring! Always start with the flooring before you paint. Since flooring takes a lot more work, you want to do that first so the debris doesn’t ruin your fresh paint job! There are so many different options to choose from - carpet, tiles, laminate, hardwood - the list goes on and on. Make sure to research what will look best in your space.

For small spaces, you want to avoid busy patterns because this will draw your eye to the floor. It’s kind of like a bad painting that takes over the whole room. Paint your room as one whole picture instead of focusing directly at the floor which highlights how small the space is. Next tip- keep your flooring the same throughout your home or level of your house. This will make your diggs look like one larger connected space. With that, choose your flooring so that you have bigger planks, tiles etc. The bigger the floor looks, the less busy the room will look. Keep it simple! A fun way of doing your space is diagonally placing the flooring. I know - that seems busy right? Wrong, check out this cool space. Be creative in your small space, keep it basic, and always make sure your style comes through!

So your flooring is in and you love it; now you need to paint your space. Start with where your window is facing. Pull out your compass and be your inner explorer. If your window is facing North, then you want to use dark colours. If your window is facing South, you want to use lighter colours. Coupled with that tip is to paint your trim, ceiling and doors all the same colour. This will trick the eye into believing the space is larger by connecting everything together. Painting multiple rooms the same colour will also have the same effect.

Want your space to look taller? Paint stripes upwards on your walls - this will draw the eye upward and give the illusion of a taller and larger space. Be bold with your choices! A small space is a great way to utilize the wall colours you wouldn't think you would normally use. Eccentric colours are typically only an accent wall in large space so to not attack your eye and make the room feel overwhelming. But, in a small space bright colours on multiple walls won’t seem overwhelming, this will also blend the walls together to open up the space.
