Why plants are the best house hack

Let's get real here - some of us are natural green thumbs and others… well, not so much. Luckily, there are plants that are super easy to take care of for us not-so-good-with-plants people. But, I think we can all agree that having plants in our home makes it feel a little more put together and ‘homey’. They help us fill the space that we can’t fill with knick-knacks and wall art. Other than filling the empty space in our homes, they also have health benefits, interior design help and more. Here are some reasons why having plants in the house are more beneficial than just being ‘homey’.

Frame Your Room

Plants can play an essential role in your interior design projects or they can be an afterthought. However, you can always add or take away plants to your room and still keep the design you want! These quiet, vibrant creatures are perfect for framing your theme in your spaces. Placing a plant on a bookshelf will add height without taking away the symmetry of your shelves. Or, adding a small succulent or herbs to your window sill can liven up the space that usually goes unused. The best way that I have seen to use plants is the hanging plants trend. They’re beautiful to add into your living room, kitchen or even that dark corner that doesn’t get the love it deserves. But, what about my bathroom that doesn’t get any sunlight? Fret not! Plants are great to add to your bathroom too! They help distract the eye away from the busy counter or the shelf that has maybe one too many hair products on it. Below, is a list of plants that are great for the bathroom with no sunlight.

  • Dracaena Janet Craig

  • Sanseveria Moonshines

  • Bromelaid

  • Golden Pathos

  • Dracaena Cintho

  • Kentia Palm

  • Philodendrom

  • Spider Plant

  • Sansevienia Laurentii

  • Sansevienia Superba

Fill Your Home with Clean Air

We all know that plants make oxygen - well I hope you do. If not, you do now! Having a plant-less home can make your air stale. Yes, we have furnace filters and other ways of keeping our air ‘clean’, but nothing cleans your air like nature does. Plants do a lot more than just take in carbon dioxide and make oxygen (which is SUPER cool, am I right?). They also clean other impurities. They eliminate harmful gases in the air, reduce the amount of allergens, and can clean the bacteria that is still left in the air when you’re sick. All of these make for healthier homes and increased immune systems. Alongside cleaning the air, plants also can boost your mood. More oxygen in the air will bring your mood up and help you stay awake in the morning. Plants may not have the power to make you a morning person, they sure can help with the dreaded Monday blues.

Natural Pop of Green

Not every colour goes together, like purple and green makes us think of Barney or orange and green makes us think of St. Patrick's day. A natural green, however, is a type of green that goes with everything. Plants are the perfect accent to any wall colour because we look at plants and don’t see green, we see a plant. We see how tall they are, how full they are or how well they fill the room. Plants are just perfect for adding colour without adding colour.

Did you also know that plants bring warmth to your home as well? Adding these lovely new friends to each room with help fill the space and bring a sense of warmth to your design. They also produce actual warmth as well; plants are working 24/7 and actually emit a small amount of heat! Have you ever been to a plant nursery? Those things are HOT. What a great way to bring warmth to your home, in two senses!

Whether you are fantastic with plants or just beginning, I hope this helps with your decision to add plants to your home. There are so many amazing places to purchase plants, and usually staffed with those who are happy to give you tips and help you pick out the right plants for your home. Make sure to surf the web for your local nurseries and support local. Now, go out! Find your new green beautiful creature.
