Count on The Big Guys to do the Heavy Lifting on Moving Day

On one of the most stressful days in your life, The Big Guys Moving Corporation has got your back.

“People are really anxious. It’s like moving day is the final straw for them, after selling their house and buying a new house,” says Katie Watson, The Big Guy’s co-owner.

“Positivity is contagious. Our clients have a lot to deal with preparing for moving day. The positivity is through the roof when we show up, and our clients end up as friends.”

Don’t be surprised to see Katie’s husband and business partner Shane Martz break into song and dance if there’s a rockin’ tune playing on the radio.

“Laughing is a big part of our day, and everyone keeps their energy level high,” Shane says.

“The biggest reward of what we do is seeing our clients burst with gratitude that they made the right choice choosing us for their move.”

Sometimes, Katie says that clients cry with relief after a The Big Guys finish a move.

“They’re just so grateful after you’ve done the hard part, and they’re just releasing all that worry and stress,” she says.

“It’s crazy how being nice can make such a big difference in this industry.”

Katie and Shane started The Big Guys in February 2019. Shane has 12 years’ experience delivering furniture and appliances for The Brick.

Their goal is to improve the negative image of moving companies after hearing stories about people being taken advantage of on moving day — or their belongings essentially held hostage on a moving truck until extra payments are made.

The Big Guys started small, moving friends. Then customers began suggesting The Big Guys to their friends and family.

“Taking care of clients created this chain-link effect of referrals, where one person was happy, and they told other people. We connected with the realtors first and they were the ones who believed in us and referred us – specifically Chantal Williams from Trillium West and Cathie and Joe Romeo from Remax,” Katie says.

Then pandemic restrictions hit in March 2020 – and business kept growing. Shane joined The Big Guys full-time. Katie followed in October 2020, ending her job as a civil engineering technologist designing road projects at the City of Kitchener.

The Big Guys handles residential and commercial moving jobs across Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, and Brantford and all of Ontario. They will also move your pianos and hot tubs and clean your house after you leave.

When planning a move, ask companies for customer references, Katie says. Google reviews are helpful – take special note of how businesses respond to comments – but she always recommends personally calling references.

The Big Guys recently moved a family from Cambridge to Calgary, including tender-loving care of a special edition Ford Mustang. It was loaded in an enclosed trailer and towed with their pick up truck.

That trailer is also used for smaller moves, such as helping seniors move into apartments or retirement homes. Indeed, it’s in helping people downsize that The Big Guys crews find great satisfaction, Katie says

“We hire our teams based on personality. In a moving company, you might think we would need people just to be strong, but that’s not what we look for. We hire caring and compassionate people and then teach them how to do the work.”
